— Rachel Donadio artsdesk@nysun.com

The Buckingham Hotel has announced the semifinalists for its annual Buckingham Prize for the Expression of Music through Art, a juried competition held in association with the Art Students League of New York and the New York Studio School, where the works are on view through the end of the month.

The 15 semifinalists are Dan Abrahms, Rebecca Bazell, Francesca Capone, Janet Cook, Harmon Bernstein, Norman Darvie, Catherine Lepp, Nicolai Nickson, Kayle Nochomovitz, Benjamin Pritchard, Rose Robin, Anne Marie Scallon, Nad Sejnel, Ronen Sharabani, and Jessica Smith.

The three finalists will be chosen in early October and shown publicly at the Art Students League, and later as part of the Buckingham’s permanent art collection. The winner will receive $10,000, second-place gets $5,000, and the third-place $2,000. The judges are the dean of the New York Studio School, Graham Nickson; the executive director of the Art Students League, Ira Goldberg; and mezzo-soprano Regina Resnik.

The Buckingham, a boutique hotel on 57th Street near Carnegie Hall, said it started the competition in 2001 “to promote traditional artwork visualizing music in all its forms.”

The competition is open to the students and faculty of the Art Students League and the New York Studio School, as well as to art students matriculated at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, the New York Academy of Art, the Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Arts.
