The Buckingham Celebrates New York International Orchid Show
New York welcomed spring with the New York International Orchid Show in Rockefeller Center on April 18th-22nd. For $15,000, The Buckingham treated its penthouse suite guests to a special extension of the show with a room filled with rare orchids and a signed copy of Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief. The flowers added to the beauty of the 2,000 square-foot penthouse which overlooks Carnegie Hall and Central Park.
The guests saw thousands of orchids at the Rockefeller Center show before their Violet Orchid Mojitos at the Rock Center Café and orchid pedicures at the Acqua Beauty Bar. After a two-night stay at the Buckingham, the guests flew to the Florida Everglades for a guided kayak tour through the orchid-filled Everglades Backcountry, bird-watching and star-gazing. When their vacation ended, the orchid-lovers took a first-class flight home.
The Buckingham also offered an Orchid Show package for the event starting at $369 per night. The package included a one-night stay at the Hotel, tickets to the Rockefeller Center show, a copy of The Orchid Thief, a potted orchid and an orchid-themed drink from the Rock Center Café.
The Buckingham is just seconds from some of Manhattan's most distinctive landmarks— Central Park, David Letterman's Ed Sullivan Theatre, the Steinway Piano gallery, the Museum of Modern Art and the world-renowned 57th Street art galleries, just to name a few. Some visitors even consider shopping meccas like Bergdorf Goodman and Tiffany's to be landmarks! Here's a selection of the most intriguing activities that the City has to offer in upcoming months:
Eating: Michael's
Executive Chef Robert Ribant creates an extravagant menu each season which has made Michael's a favorite among New Yorkers and tourists for fine dinning. Its spring menu contains 13 original creations including caramelized Maine sea scallops and grilled rack of lamb with turnips. The summer menu begins mid-June.
Michael's is located at 24 W. 55th St. (between 5th & 6th Aves.)—just two blocks from the Buckingham.
Doing: Lincoln Center Guided Tours
Capture a behind-the-scenes look at this world renowned performing arts institution. You'll visit the home of the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic and the New York City Ballet. Enjoy a light meal at Café Vienna or at the outdoor Fountain Plaza kiosk.
This tour takes place through August, Tuesday-Saturday between 11:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. Many Saturday afternoon tours do not include the Metropolitan Opera House because a matinee performance is in progress. The tour starts at 165 W. 65th St. (between Broadway and Amsterdam Ave.)—just one mile from the Buckingham.
Listening: New York Philharmonic Concert in Central Park
Pack a blanket, bug spray and something to eat, and head to the Great Lawn in Central Park to enjoy the symphony. The Central Park concert is popular, so be sure to arrive two hours early in order to find a place to sit. Enjoy the beautiful scenes of trees while you wait for the music to begin. This summer, hear pieces by Berlioz, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky as violinist Stefan Jackiw plays under the direction of conductor Ludovic Morlot.
