   Giuseppe De Luca
For more than thirty years, De Luca—a best friend of Enrique Caruso—was the leading baritone at the Metropolitan Opera. His career path began in Rome where, at the age of eight, he entered a school specializing in teaching singing to begin his formal training. At fifteen, he entered Santa Cecilia Accademia where he studied for five years with Venceslao Persichimi, who was considered one of the most important vocal coaches of his time.

De Luca performed throughout Europe and the US, appeared at La Scala for eight seasons, created the role of Sharpless in Puccini's "Madame Butterfly," and was frequently partnered with such greats as his friend Caruso. He made his first recordings in 1905 and 1907 and had a repertoire of nearly 100 roles spanning his career of almost five decades. Described as a "paragon of vocal virtues," De Luca resided on the fifth floor of the Buckingham Hotel over a period of years, where he entertained as well as taught opera students.
