BUCKINGHAM NAMED OFFICIAL NEW YORK HOTEL OF
AMERICAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA LEAGUE
NEW YORK, May 25, 2004 – The Buckingham Hotel at 101 West 57th Street in Manhattan (http://www.buckinghamhotel.com/ or 1-888-511-1900) has been named the Official New York Hotel of the American Symphony Orchestra League. League members will call the Buckingham home when in New York, joining a distinguished clientele of businesspeople and families who appreciate the superior comfort, style, amenities and location of the 100-suite Buckingham.
League President and CEO Henry Fogel stated, “Not only am I thrilled at our relationship with the Buckingham Hotel – but I am thrilled with my accommodations there. This is a truly lovely hotel, with musical reminders everywhere you turn, rooms that are wonderfully spacious and comfortable, and a warm and personal feeling from the staff one rarely finds these days.”
“We’re delighted to have this special association with the American Symphony Orchestra League, continuing the Buckingham Hotel’s tradition of embracing music and art,” said Stephen Shapiro, owner of the Buckingham.
Founded in 1942 and chartered by Congress in 1962, the American Symphony Orchestra League provides leadership and service to America’s orchestras while communicating to the public the value and importance of orchestras and the music they perform. The League serves more than 900 member symphony, chamber, youth and collegiate orchestras of all sizes; links a national network of thousands of musicians, conductors, managers, board members, volunteers, staff members, and business partners; and provides a wealth of services, information, end educational opportunities to its members.
Music suffuses the Buckingham Hotel. The hotel routinely surprises guests with complimentary tickets to Carnegie Hall, located across the street. The hotel offers guests selections from its own library of live Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center music and performances on CD and DVD. The world’s top classical musicians are among the Buckingham Hotel’s frequent guests.
Recently, 22 year-old piano prodigy Lang Lang of China chose the Buckingham during his U.S. debut at Carnegie Hall. Maxim Vengerov, 30 year-old Russian violin sensation, stayed at the Buckingham when he opened Carnegie Hall’s season and again in March. There are scores more, from conductors to pianists to jazz players. The Buckingham was home to Ignacy Jan Pederewski, the world renowned composer, pianist, humanitarian and first Prime Minister of free Poland after World War I. His Buckingham suite has been recreated at a Chicago museum.
The hotel sponsors The Buckingham Prize for the Expression of Music through Art, a juried art competition open to art and design students. Last year, a total of $17,000 was awarded to three young painters. The winners’ works are hung in the Buckingham lobby. The prize is a special effort to support the arts the Buckingham undertakes with co-sponsors the Art Students League of New York and the New York Studio School. One of the judges was renowned soprano Regina Resnik.
