MOST UNUSUAL HOTEL:

BUCKINGHAM HAS RARE LOVE OF MUSIC, ART

$17,000 Art Prize, Prodigy Guests, Free Concert Tickets, Lush Music History

NEW YORK, April 8, 2004 – Carnegie Hall tickets on your pillow.  A $17,000 art prize given in the Hotel’s name.  The world’s top classical musicians as guests.  A location at 101 West 57th Street in Manhattan between Steinway’s piano gallery and Carnegie Hall.  A lending library of live Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center music and performances on CD and DVD.  Décor that echoes the red velvet and dark wood of a concert hall.  It’s all at the Buckingham Hotel (http://www.buckinghamhotel.com/ or 1-888-511-1900), a 100-suite boutique hotel in its 75th year combining love of music and art with gracious service for business and leisure travelers alike, including pre-arrival concierge service, business and fitness centers, high-speed Internet and more.

“Whether you love classical music or being at the center of business and arts in New York, the Buckingham is for you,” says Stephen Shapiro, owner of the property that is lively with music and art -- and just steps from the headquarters of the world’s mightiest companies.  Classical music greets guests as soon as they enter.  Never stuffy, the Buckingham is a home away from home with kitchens in each of its 100 suites.

The world’s top classical musicians stay at the Buckingham.  Recently, 22 year-old piano prodigy Lang Lang of China chose the Buckingham during his U.S. debut at Carnegie Hall.  Maxim Vengerov, 30 year-old Russian violin sensation, stayed at the Buckingham when he opened Carnegie Hall’s season and again during his return engagement in March.  There are scores more, from conductors to pianists to jazz players.  The Buckingham was literally home to Ignacy Jan Pederwsky, the world renowned composer, pianist, humanitarian and first Prime Minister of free Poland after World War I.  His Buckingham suite has been recreated at a Chicago museum.

The Buckingham Prize for the Expression of Music through Art is a juried competition open to students of New York’s seven largest art and design schools.  A total of $17,000 was awarded last year to three young painters, and winners’ works are hung in the Buckingham lobby.  It is a special effort to support the arts the Buckingham undertakes with co-sponsors the Art Students League of New York and the Studio School.  And one of the judges was renowned soprano Regina Resnik.

Better still, Buckingham Hotel guests are honored randomly with free tickets to Carnegie Hall concerts by the world’s leading symphony orchestras.
