Staying in the City With Fido
From the Boston Globe:
By Linda Laban
Globe Correspondent / January 27, 2008
NEW YORK - Traveling with a dog is like traveling with a child only harder, especially in cities. Manhattan, however, is quite dog friendly, and the Buckingham and Muse hotels make a stay with your dog a pleasure.
Stephen Shapiro and Amy Attas, a veterinarian, own the Buckingham and live there with their two rescued pugs, Leonardo and Winston. Attas is the founder of CityPets, a veterinary house-call service for dogs and cats in Manhattan, and does a weekly radio spot, "Pets and the City."
The hotel`s concierge is as happy to secure tickets to nearby Carnegie Hall as he is to arrange a dog-sitter. When Barney, my 70-pound sheepdog mix, stepped into the elevator, the bellhop grinned and asked whether he was going to appear on the "Late Show With David Letterman." "Those dogs who do the stupid pet tricks always stay here," he said.
A former apartment hotel, the Buckingham has suites with equipped kitchens, a spacious business center, and an exercise room. We felt comfortable leaving Barney, who is neither a barker nor a chewer, in our room while we popped out for dinner. We simply told reception and left a cellphone number, just in case.
A bonus with the Buckingham, near the corner of Sixth Avenue and 57th Street, is that Central Park is two blocks away. When New York is waking up, city dogs and their owners are here exercising and playing.
Times Square, on the other hand, is not dog friendly. It`s too crowded. But just off the square, on 46th between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, you will find an open-arms pet policy at the Muse Hotel, with its optional Pampered Pooch program, which includes Hers `n` Furs pedicures. The snazzy hotel even has a doggie concierge, Ginger, a teacup Pomeranian. Her owner, Lauren Myerson, is the hotel`s human concierge and she brings Ginger, who`s quite cute in her Muse pinafore, to work. "I`m trying to get her on the payroll," Myerson joked.
Ginger, who`s not much of a dog`s dog, gave Barney the cold shoulder. She`s most hoteliers` idea of a dog, though. Many pet-friendly lodgings have a weight limit, often 20 pounds. Some hotels even have a no-stay list for certain breeds, including pit bulls.
A bonus at the Muse, and all Kimpton hotels, is that owners can relax with their dogs at the early evening complimentary wine hour in the lobby. One couple huffed a little when they saw Barney, but most were thrilled. One woman, after a couple of drinks, came over to cuddle; she missed her Chihuahua. A couple from Dallas guessed that Barney, an adopted dog, was part Australian sheep dog. They had left their two Aussies back home.
"Oh, how wonderful to see a dog sitting in a hotel," exclaimed one woman as she walked into the lobby, wearily dragging her suitcase. "Especially one that`s smiling and wagging his tail."
